The landscape

Every state is writing these rules.

1,561 AI-related bills were introduced in 45 states this session (multistate.ai, Mar 2026) — far more than one site can track reliably. The multistate.ai tracker is the live source of truth for everything moving right now. Below is a short, hand-checked list of what's already real.

State Status Checked
Montana HB 178 already requires human review of AI-driven decisions made by state agencies — the closest existing precedent to what this movement is asking cities and counties to adopt. (Epstein Becker Green) Aug 2026
Colorado An amended AI Act, effective January 1, 2027, preserves a right to "meaningful human review of adverse automated decisions" for consequential decisions — employment, housing, lending, healthcare, and similar. Not yet in effect. (Hunton Andrews Kurth) Aug 2026

This table is short on purpose — every row here is a promise we keep checking. See our correction policy for how that works, or the multistate.ai tracker for the fuller, faster-moving picture.

Don't see your state? That's the point — it isn't decided yet.
